Biography
Dr. Clara S. Batzdorf, MD/PhD, is a young opera singer, medical doctor, and scientist from Berlin.
The voice of Dr. Batzdorf has been called truly remarkable and extraordinary. Her range spans nearly four octaves, it is powerful throughout the registers, brilliant, and equipped with high endurance and flexibility. This allows her to sing dramatic as well as coloratura roles.
Her music career began at the early age of four when she started to study the violin. Soon after, she discovered her passion for the art of the voice and became a member of the children’s choir of the Staatsoper Unter den Linden Berlin.
During this early period she participated in many productions on the grand stage, sang her first solo parts, observed the work of some of the most important conductors of our time including Daniel Barenboim and Sir Simon Rattle, and won the first prize in the youth competition “Jugend Musiziert”.
As a young adult, Dr. Batzdorf began her professional vocal education under the guidance of Kammersängerin Jutta Vulpius and joined the youth chamber choir „Junges Consortium Berlin“ with whom she traveled across Europe and won several international competitions.
In 2020, she became the student of Baritone Uwe Griem, himself a student of E. Gruberova and M. Caballé, and with his help, she quickly built a vast opera repertoire. Dr. Batzdorf continued to hone her vocal abilities in masterclasses with Edda Moser, Donato Di Stefano, Chris Merritt, and Juliane Banse, and in coachings with conductors and pianists Thomas Guggeis, Ivan Törzs, Klaus Sallmann, and Julien Salemkour. She has demonstrated her vocal artistry across Europe and was awarded the gold prize by the Classical Music Artists Award.
Her roles include among others the Queen of the Night (Die Zauberflöte, W.A. Mozart), Contessa (Le Nozze di Figaro, W.A. Mozart), Donna Anna (Don Giovanni, W.A. Mozart), Gilda (Rigoletto, G. Verdi), Violetta (La Traviata, G. Verdi), Lucia (Lucia di Lammermoor, G. Donizetti), Elvira (I Puritani, V. Bellini), Micaëla (Carmen, G. Bizet), Mimi (La Bohème, G. Puccini), Agathe (Der Freischütz, C.M. Weber), Elisabeth (Tannhäuser, R. Wagner), and Elsa (Lohengrin, R. Wagner).
